The Best Temporary Tattoos: 8 Things to Check Before You Buy

In short

The best temporary tattoo depends on what you want, but eight criteria separate good from bad: does the color sit in the skin, how long does it really last, is there a full ingredient list, are the lines sharp, are there sizes up to sleeves, can you upload your own design, how easy is it to apply and how fast and customs-free is delivery to you.

Search for "best temporary tattoos" and you get lists – often written by the brands themselves. We are a brand too, so we will not tell you we are the best. Instead, here are the eight criteria we would check ourselves, so you can compare any brand fairly.

The checklist at a glance

Criterion Good sign Warning sign
1. Realism Color in the skin, matte, no edge Shiny film, visible outline
2. Wear time Honest range like "1–2 weeks", depending on body area "Lasts a month" on every body part
3. Safety Full ingredient list, EU safety assessment No ingredients, "black in 1 hour"
4. Line quality Sharp fine lines, dotwork, script Blurry or thick outlines
5. Sizes From finger size to sleeve One size fits all
6. Own designs Upload, text, AI tool Catalog only
7. Application Clear steps, video, under a minute No instructions
8. Delivery Local warehouse, no customs, tracking Shipped from overseas, customs fees

1. Does the color sit in the skin?

This is the single biggest difference. Stick-on tattoos sit on the skin as a film and look like stickers. Jagua-based 2-week tattoos stain the top layer of the skin and look like real ink. Why that matters is explained in fake tattoos that look real.

2. How long does it really last?

No temporary tattoo lasts exactly the same on every body part. A trustworthy brand gives you a range and explains what affects it: friction, water, skin type, application. Jagua-based tattoos fade after about 1–2 weeks as the top layer of skin renews. Be skeptical of products that promise a month or more everywhere.

3. Is it safe and transparent?

In the EU, temporary tattoos are cosmetic products and need a safety assessment and a full ingredient list. If a product hides what is in it, or promises black color within an hour, walk away – instant black can be a sign of PPD ("black henna"). Details in are temporary tattoos safe?

4. Are the lines sharp?

Look at real customer photos, not just renderings: are fine lines still fine, is small text readable, does dotwork stay dotted? Printed transfer designs have an advantage over freehand gel here.

5. Are there sizes for your idea?

A small symbol on the finger and a full sleeve are two different products. Good brands offer sizes from tiny to sleeve, so you can wear exactly the size you are planning.

6. Can you design your own?

If you are testing a future real tattoo, you need your exact design. Check whether you can upload your own artwork, add text and choose the size – and whether there is a tool to create a design if you do not have one yet. See design your own 2-week tattoo and the AI tattoo generator.

7. How easy is it to apply?

The best tattoo is worthless if the application goes wrong. Look for clear step-by-step instructions and a video. Transfer tattoos only need water and under a minute; gel needs a steady hand and drying time. Our routine is in how to apply a temporary tattoo.

8. How fast and expensive is delivery to you?

Check where the brand ships from. Orders from outside your customs area can come with import fees and long delivery times. Tattup ships to Switzerland from a Swiss warehouse and to the EU from a warehouse in Germany, so there are no customs fees within Switzerland and the EU. All shipping costs are in the Help Center.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Tattup tattoo last?

Your Tattup fades naturally after about 1–2 weeks – at the pace your top layer of skin renews itself. How long it lasts exactly depends on:

  • the body area (less friction and water = longer wear)
  • your daily habits (friction, water contact, sports)
  • how well you soaked the backing paper
  • your individual skin chemistry

Pro tips to keep it fresh for longer:

  • Leave your Tattup untouched for the first eight hours.
  • After about eight hours, a warm shower or a light sweat helps the color get even deeper.
  • Pick spots with little friction or water contact.
  • After 48 hours, moisturize daily to keep the look fresh.
  • Frequent washing, scrubbing and exfoliating make it fade faster – avoid them as long as you want to wear it.

Our guide shows how long a Tattup lasts on different body parts.

Are Tattup tattoos safe?

Yes. Our formula was tested by a laboratory and rated safe in a safety report under the EU Cosmetics Regulation – as required for every cosmetic product in the EU.

As with any cosmetic product, an allergic reaction can never be ruled out completely. If you have sensitive skin, do a small patch test first. We recommend Tattup for ages 18 and up.

Are there any customs fees?

Within the EU (including Switzerland, Germany and Austria) there are no customs fees: orders to Switzerland ship from our Swiss warehouse, orders to the EU from our warehouse in Germany.

Outside Switzerland and the EU, customs or import fees may apply depending on local laws. Unfortunately we can’t predict or cover these – if in doubt, your local customs office can help.

Is Tattup friendly for all skin tones?

For sure! Tattup’s formula merges with the amino acids in your epidermis, turning that patch of skin a bold shade of blue or black. On deeper skin tones, the tattoo can look even more vibrant.
